| 6400.110(e) | The smoke detectors in the home were not interconnected during the initial inspection. The agency was able to adjust and reconnect the smoke detectors during the inspection. | If the home serves four or more individuals or if the home has three or more stories including the basement and attic, there shall be at least one smoke detector on each floor interconnected and audible throughout the home or an automatic fire alarm system that is audible throughout the home. The requirement for homes with three or more stories does not apply to homes licensed in accordance with this chapter prior to November 8, 1991. | The home is equipped with a new wireless, interlinked smoke alarm (X-Sense), which operates differently from the previous model that the home had installed. During the monthly fire drill, which was conducted in early October, staff pressed and held the test button to activate the alarm, following the procedure used with the old detector. However, according to the user manual for the new device, holding the test button either deactivates the interconnectivity feature or silences the alarm, rather than triggering it as intended.
All staff assigned to this home will be trained on the importance of not pressing any buttons on the alarm itself, as the new interlinked smoke alarm operates differently from the previous model. Training will include a review of the correct procedure for activating the X-Sense smoke alarm during fire drills, which requires using canned smoke rather than manually triggering the alarm. To reinforce this, the Program Specialist or Program Director will conduct a demonstration fire drill so staff can observe the proper method for using canned smoke to sound the alarm. |
